Samsung Display - 5 Highlights of the new OLED display

Laptop Samsung

Samsung Display earlier has announced their mass-production of the world's first 90Hz OLED screen designed for laptops, which will start in March. More details such as resolution and aspect ratio on the new OLED display have yet to be released. However, Samsung Display featured a superior image quality within a slim and light bezel in its video. Here's what to expect from the new OLED display.

90Hz OLED Display

Before the Samsung Display announces the 90Hz OLED display release, the highest refresh rate offered in laptops and notebooks was only 60Hz, unlike other technology displays, which can hit up to 120Hz. Hence, back then, the consumer would have to choose between a high refresh rate panel or an OLED 60Hz panel with a better vibrant visual.
With the new 90Hz OLED display, consumers can now get a high refresh rate and punchier color visual. According to BusinessWire, the new OLED displays can also transition from one screen to the next quicker than LCD screens with the same refresh rate.

Superior image quality

Ultrapure Color & True Black: Featured in the video are the superior image quality that brings ultrapure RGB color (contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 or more) and a true black of 0.0005 nits. Meaning consumers get to experience a more vibrant visual than ever on their display.

Increased DCI-P3 Coverage: DCI-P3 refers to the digital cinema color standard - an emerging color space to replace sRGB with a wider color range for smartphones, cameras, and monitors. The new Samsung OLED display has an increase to 120% DCI-P3 compared to the conventional 74%.

Slim Bezel Display

It has a slim bezel with a screen to body ratio stretch out to 93% (blade bezel) from the 85% conventional display, giving it 8% more working space and a seamless, immersive experience.

Ultra-sleek Design

Thinness: As featured in the video, the ultra-sleek OLED display is only 1.0mm thick compared to its predecessor 2.1mm thickness, which is approximately 50% thinner.

Lightness: With a reduction of approximately 50% thickness, the panel's weight is also significantly reduced. Weighing 130g only, it is 30% lighter than conventional, which weighs around 180g.

Invisible camera Hole (UPC-Under panel camera)

Despite having only a 1.0 mm thickness, the OLED panel still consists of a camera. Fitted within it is an under panel camera instead of the traditional one, making it possible to maintain the ultra-sleek panel design. As per the video, it will appear as an invisible camera hole on the panel itself. However, this also raises a concern about the webcam's image quality.

All in all, it is quite exciting to see how the brands will be working with this new Samsung OLED display in their line of laptops in the year 2021.
